Witold PileckiToday is the 65th anniversaty of death of rotmistrz (cavalry captain) Witold Pilecki, Polish underground soldier during German occupation of Poland, best known of his “Witold Report”, the first intelligence report on Auschwitz concentration camp, which he wrote after deliberately allowing to being caught during street roundup in Warsaw along with 2000 innocent people and transported to the camp from where he eventually escaped.Arrested by the Ministry of Public Security in 1947, he was repeatedly tortured by the most brutal communistic officers but revealed no sensitive information. He then underwent a show trial and was sentenced to death. At 9.30pm, on 25th of May 1948, he was executed by a shot in the back of the head. His grave was never found.
